Movie: The Stanford Prison Experiment ( 8/10 )

Moving movie about human nature.

In 1971, twenty-four male students are selected to take on randomly assigned roles of prisoners and guards in a mock prison situated in the basement of the Stanford psychology building.

Thoughts that came up during the movie:

If you are weak you can't solve the problem.

The system mindfuck us.

Cigarettes and glass of water are privilige in prison.

If you are in prison you're not good citizen. You're criminal.

You don't know what you are capable of until you get in a situation.

Human nature is that we can all turn into beasts when in some hard situation.

If you are weak your reaction is to seek protection.

Good citizen is obidient.

You can take much more bullshit than you think you can.

Revolt the bully ! Set boundaries. Show him your teeths.

Don't take it personally.

Do not accept to be prisoner and therefore victim.

This guy is not sick. He's weak.

You break the law but must be aware of the consequences. If there's no penalty, you go on with anti-social behaviour.

Experiment goes with introspection

Introspection is not enough

Experimental phase is important. We do experiments to test our hypothesis.
We need to work hard and have fun with our pilot program or beta phase.

a.) to test our assumtions, whether they are valid or not

b.) to see the effects, results and statistics

c.) to mark advantages and disadvatages

d.) to do split testing, see which assumtions are better

e.) to observe all related information, get explanation and reach conclusions

f.) to rank ideas according to success criteria.

If we fail, we must fail fast. If we're right, we must put our resources behind right idea and multiply.

Simple formula: observation --> explanation --> conclusion.

First, we do introspection in the form of white paper or short review / report and then move to experimentation.

The last step is presentation of the findings and reaching of consensus.

Go or no-go.

( note: this should be our corporate memo )

Call your favourite plant

Plants and humans finally talk

Botanicalls is a project of a team of four students at the ITP program at NYU.

Background notes :
The Botanicalls project is fundamentally about communication between plants and people. We are empowering both by inventing new avenues of interaction. Plants that might otherwise be neglected are given the ability to call people and request assistance. People who are unsure of their ability to effectively care for growing things are given visual and aural clues.

When a plant on the botanicalls network needs a little water, it can call a human and ask for exactly what it needs.

Brilliant.

On ot the stated goals is to keep the plants alive by translating the communication protocols of the plants (leaf habit, color of foliage, droop, etc) to more common human communication protocols (email, voice phone calls, digital visualizations, etc).

Brilliant.
Something not meant to be communicating is doing just that. I wonder, how many systems we can setup on top of Botanicalls idea ?
