Wise words about productivity

Productivity isn’t about how much busywork you can cram into an hour, how organized your calendar looks, having an inbox of zero emails, or having the fanciest scheduling apps — it’s about the result you produce.

Movies - A list

To remember some movies I need to watch or re-watch in the future.

  1. Sean Connery in Goldfinger. D: Guy Hamilton (1964). Any Bond would do but I like the last scene where our man, having parachuted at the last minute from a plane crash hides from the rescue helicopter so he can have a few more minutes with Pussy Galore (before moving on to the next Bond Girl in the next Bond movie.)
  2. Warren Beatty in Shampoo D: Hal Ashby (1975). A hairdresser who beds most of his clients sounds like a porno premise, but Beatty plays him as a foolish romantic (confessing to his girlfriend “A beautiful girl, I mean that’s it! It makes my day. I mean, it makes me feel like I’m gonna live forever. Maybe it means I don’t love them. Maybe it means I don’t love you, I don’t know. No one’s going to tell me that I don’t LIKE them!”). It’s bittersweet that he gets left with the life he loves.
  3. Robert Downey Jr. in The Pick-up Artist. D: James Toback (1987). The one about the compulsive seducer (“Did anyone ever tell you that you have the face of a Botticelli and the body of a Degas?”) for whom it’s the chase, not the finish line that matters. It’s also the one about the girl (Molly Ringwald) who’s smarter than him and gives just enough weight to his lightness.
  4. Vince Vaughn in Swingers. D: Doug Liman (1996). The ladies man as dubious life coach (“I don’t want you to be the guy in the PG-13 movie everyone’s “really” hoping makes it happen. I want you to be like the guy in the rated R movie you’re not sure you like yet. You’re not sure where he’s coming from. You’re a bad man, Mikey”). It made Vaughn a star. Still can’t remember if he ever got laid in the movie.
  5. Ewan McGregor in Down With Love. D: Peyton Reed (2003). An ingenious pastiche of the Rock Hudson/Doris Day movies, McGregor is Catcher Block, a swinging men’s magazine writer who always has a stewardess on his arm (“I took the Bossa Nova Triplets to Cocoa Beach. NASA was having a luau.”) and a bombshell secretary in his office. That the whole movie is bracketed with air quotes is part of its charm. That the hunter gets captured by the game in a way no movie had ever tried gives the joke a mild, pleasurable sting.
  6. Magic Mike.
